One of if not the most important features to consider when remodeling your kitchen has to be the cabinets because they offer so many benefits from both an organizational and aesthetic standpoint. If you’re not familiar with the process, it can seem like an overwhelming task due to the abundance of options out there so we’ve come up with this step-by-step guide with everything you need to know in order to select the perfect cabinets for your next home project.
Step 1: Budget
Before you make any design choices, you’ll need to figure out what you’re willing to spend as that will end up playing a role in what options are available to you in order to stay within said budget. 50% or more of a kitchen remodel cost is allocated to cabinets in many cases and they can range anywhere from $4,000-$13,000 on average which will vary depending on several factors which we’ll get into next.
Step 2: Cabinet Type
Cabinets fall into several types each with their own advantages. On one end, there’s pre-assembled or stock cabinets which are mass produced, readily available, and easy to install. As a result, these are usually a more affordable option but the downside, however, is you’re usually limited in terms of sizing and design. Most people prefer custom or semi-custom which will be more expensive but are worth it because as the name suggests they’re ordered specifically for your layout.
Step 3: Panel Style/Color
Now, it’s time to decide what you want your cabinets to look like. The most common panel design is called shaker which you probably recognize by their bold rectangular frame. An alternative option if you’re thinking more modern is flat or slab with their smooth and simplistic look.
One of the oldest debates when it comes to kitchen design is whether to choose a natural wood look or add a splash of color. When making this decision, keep in mind what will work best with your countertops, appliances, and flooring. Many studies have found that white is the most common choice because it’s neutral properties rarely go out of style. Stained wood however, provides a sense of warmth and helps brings the outdoors in so you can’t go wrong either way.
Step 4: Accessories
Lastly, don’t overlook the importance of hardware. This refers to the decorative handles and knobs that can add an elegant finishing touch. Another great addition is the use of a glass window unit that will allow you to display your favorite China set, mugs, or cookbook.
